There are roughly a thousand houseboats on the Vembanad system now. They are comfortable, they are photogenic, and they can only go where the channel is wide and deep enough — which is about four percent of the water.
Get into a canoe
A punted country canoe draws six inches and fits canals a metre wide. That is where the backwaters still function as a place people live: toddy tappers, a duck herder moving two thousand birds by whistle, someone's laundry on a coir rope strung between two coconut palms.

Three places to start
- Munroe Island — canoe routes through eight islets, best at dawn before the day heats up.
- Kuttanad — farmland below sea level, held back by bunds.
- Kumarakom's western canals — twenty minutes from the resorts and an entirely different soundtrack.
“The big boats see the lake. The canoes see the village. They are not the same trip.”
Before you book
Whoever you go with, ask the same three questions: what is the group size, who is the lead guide on your specific departure, and what exactly happens if the weather turns. Any operator worth a slow week will answer all three in one message, without hedging.
Every agency listed on TrackYourTour publishes its cancellation terms, guide-to-traveller ratio and verified reviews on the package page itself — so you can compare the answers side by side instead of chasing them over calls.
Dev covers coastlines, backwaters and the parts of South India that never make the shortlist. Based in Kochi, usually damp.
